Portugal Increases Online Gaming Revenue by 65.4 Million During 4th Qtr

Portugal has recently had a buoyant online gaming industry with increasing revenues in all areas of the market. During the last quarter of last year, gambling revenues grew to €65.4 million (£ 55.6m / $ 72.3m).

During the last quarter of 2019, revenues increased 52.1% year-over-year compared to the €43 million recorded in the fourth quarter of 2018. Online gambling revenue also experienced a fabulous 49.1% year-on-year increase to reach € 32.0 million. Total player spending in this sector increased a solid 47.9% to 852.2 million euros.

On the other hand, during the fourth quarter of 2019, slot machines contributed 69.0% of total online casino bets. Ahead of French roulette that increased 13.6% and online poker that had a 9.4% share in the gaming market.

During the fourth quarter of last year, there were 12 authorized operators in total in the Portuguese market, which means an increase of three compared to the previous year. The operators included 20 game licenses, of which 9 were sports betting and 11 were gambling.

The games on the ground didn’t fare so well

The operators with a license from the gaming regulator Serviço Regulação and Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ), disbursed a total of €35.8 in online gambling taxes in the fourth quarter. This meant an increase of 67.4% compared to 2018.
